Follow The Quadrantids Meteor Shower Online [LIVE VIDEO]

Stargazers in the Northern Hemisphere can look forward to 2012's first meteor shower which is set to peak at 2:30 a.m. EST on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Forecasters expect the shower to peak around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

Astronomers are predicting a brief two hour meteor shower Wednesday morning, between 3:00 and 5:00 am Central Time. The Quandrantids, or "Quads" as most people call them, are named for an old constellation called Quadrans Muralis.

Gemenid meteor shower watchers can't figure out where all the material in the event comes from. Asteroid 3200 Phaethon, the apparent source of the Gemenid meteor shower, doesn't seem to shed enough rock and dust to account for the shower's intensity.
